The sanding process is a very important part of the furniture production process. It is directly related to the smoothness of subsequent production and the quality of the product’s appearance. It has an important impact on the final sale of the furniture. What is sanding?
What is sanding?
We can understand sanding word for word. “Sand” is the treatment: the surface of the part is carefully cut by using consumables. The “polish” is the finish: the flat and smooth effect that the part has after the treatment.
Sanding
There are various sanding methods, techniques and equipment. There are different sanding methods for different furniture. At this stage, the main types of sanding are flat sanding, shaped sanding and planing sanding.

Flat sanding
Flat sanding is a sanding process for flat furniture and wood without any surface finish. Flat sanding can be carried out directly with a belt sander. It can be brushed in one pass directly with a roller. It is very efficient and fast and saves sandpaper. At the same time, flat sanding is important for the colour and surface finish of the product.
The surface sanding of wood veneer furniture and thin wood veneer panels is based on plane sanding. To ensure the quality of the process, you can choose calibration sanding, fine surface sanding or surface dusting sanding depending on the accuracy, quality and surface condition of the substrate.
Notes on Flat Sanding
Common problems with flat sanding are generally divided into three kinds. First, the sanding effect is poor; second, the sanding appears abnormal texture; third, the sanding machine platform appears abnormal.
Solution:
1.Sanding effect
Firstly check whether the type of sanding belt and the speed of the sanding belt meet the process requirements. Secondly, adjust the post-sanding height and check whether the sanding belt is worn.
2.Sanding appears abnormal texture
First check whether the sanding belt swing is normal. If normal, check the wear state of the sanding belt. If the plate appears coarse and orderly texture, check whether the surface of the sanding belt is attached. If there is, brush away or blow away with compressed air
3.Sander platform abnormal
Check whether the conveyor belt is abnormal. Check whether the abrasion of the sanding belt is the same. Observe whether the rotation of the grinding wheel is abnormally uneven. Use calipers to measure whether the thickness of the plate is the same. If the above are normal, adjust the sanding platform parallel screw until the thickness of the plate is the same.

Shaped sanding
Shaped sanding is mainly aimed at furniture with predominantly shaped surfaces, such as wooden doors, chair legs, stair risers etc. Because of the large number of concave and convex surfaces, the sanding process becomes even more important. If the sanding process is not mature, problems of over-sanding or missed sanding can occur.
Let’s take wooden doors as an example. The shaped sand is mainly for the overall width of the wooden door and the wooden door wood line two, respectively, using a different sanding method. The overall width of the wooden door is sanded mainly by means of strip brush sanding wheels. This allows for different degrees of convexity and increases the efficiency of the door sanding. The sanding of wooden lines is mainly done with strip brush type sanding wheels and non-woven wheels.
Notes on shaped sanding
Improper handling of shaped sand can lead to over-sanding and sand leakage. Or the workpiece may only be sanded smooth but not flat. Solution.
1. Adjust the sanding height, speed and consumables of the sander according to the material properties and structure changes.
2、Improve the skills and quality of the sanding team to improve efficiency. Also improve the matching and quality of sanding sisal and gauze strips.

Planing sanding
Sanding is the use of a spiral planer to sand the wood. For hard wooden boards or boards with a high chip volume, planer sanding effectively eliminates defects such as burrs, spurs, grooves and knife marks left on the board surface.
Common forms of planing and sanding are mainly carried out with planing and sanding machines. The planing and sanding machine can be used for multiple purposes: planing, sanding, planing and sanding. The machine can be adjusted to the production task with a single click, and the precision control of the substrate can reach ± 0.05 mm.
Notes on planing sanding
Improper gritting can result in backwards popping, uneven surfaces and gritted patterns. This can affect the quality of the process.
Solution:
1. According to different wood and production tasks timely adjustment of the planer blade.
2. After the planing sanding machine work, not two people at the same time on a planing sanding wheel sanding. And be careful to carry out the front operation, not the reverse operation.

Polish
After the process of sand treatment, the quality and effect of the furniture surface can be effectively improved.
Effect of flat sanding
After a good flat sanding process, the sanded board has the following characteristics. Burrs and protrusions are removed, the surface is flat and of equal thickness, the surface is free of dust and there are no sanding defects.
Effect of shaping sanding
The best results after shaped sand treatment are: precise sanding, even surface, uniform depth of sand marks, correct shape of the part and no abrasions or other defects.
Effect of planing sanding
The sanding process ensures the overall flatness of the wood product. It also provides a fine finish on the surface of the wood and ensures that the dimensions of the wood are identical.
